• Samsung's Galaxy W27 is out in China as a dressed up, China exclusive take on the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, priced from CNY 18,999 (about $2,850).
  • You get a gold trimmed dual tone finish, Tiantong satellite calling and a collector's box that packs a 45W charger plus a Kevlar case.
  • Underneath it's pure Fold 8 Ultra, 8 inch inner screen, Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy, 200MP main camera and a 5,000mAh battery.

Samsung's flashiest foldable isn't leaving China. The Galaxy W27 just launched there as a gilded Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, same top tier hardware but wrapped in gold accents and satellite calling you won't find anywhere else.

Samsung Galaxy W27 Is a Luxury Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra for China

This is Samsung's W series playbook with China Telecom all over again, take a Galaxy Z Fold and pitch it to business and luxury buyers. And that's exactly what the W27 is, a Fold 8 Ultra underneath with a fancier exterior and a couple China only tricks.

It's China only right now. No global launch has been announced. Reservations are live in China and units start shipping November 13.

Design and Build: Gold Accents and Collector's Edition Box

Design is where the W27 tries to justify itself. Samsung gave it a dual tone shell with gold on the frame, hinge, camera island and lens rings, plus that “Heart to the World” badge on the back.

You've got two colors, Jihu Blue and Jixia Hong, basically dark blue and deep red with a textured frame. The frame is Advanced Armor Aluminum and the cover glass is Corning Gorilla Glass Ceramic 3. It's rated IP48 for water and limited dust, and the fingerprint reader is a side mounted capacitive unit.

It measures the same as the Fold 8 Ultra, 8.9mm folded and 215g. Here's the nice touch, it comes in a collector's edition box with a 45W charger and a Kevlar protective case included.

Displays: 8-Inch Foldable and 6.5-Inch Cover Screen

No changes on the screens, they're lifted straight from the Fold 8 Ultra. Inside there's an 8-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X at 2,504 x 2,256 with a 20.9:18 ratio. Outside it's a 6.5-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X at 2,520 x 1,080 and 20:9.

Both hit 3,000 nits peak, support HDR10+ and run at 120Hz. So you get a small tablet when it's open and a normal phone when it's shut.

Performance, Software and Satellite Connectivity

Inside it's the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy with 16GB of RAM and 512GB or 1TB storage. There's no 256GB option, which is part of why the starting price is so steep.

It ships with Android 17 and One UI 9.0 and Samsung promises seven major OS updates. Galaxy AI and Samsung DeX are both supported.

The one real hardware extra is Tiantong satellite communication for calls and texts when you're off grid, including full voice calls over China's Tiantong network. You don't get that on the global Fold 8 Ultra. The rest is flagship standard, 5G, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6.0, UWB and NFC.

Cameras and Battery Stay Flagship-Grade

Cameras are untouched from the Fold 8 Ultra. On the back there's a 200MP primary with OIS, a 50MP ultrawide with autofocus and a 10MP telephoto with 3x optical zoom. And you get two 10MP selfie cameras, one on the cover and one inside.

Every camera shoots 4K at 60fps, and the main plus ultrawide can push 8K at 30fps.

Battery is a 5,000mAh pack with 45W wired charging and 20W Qi2.2 wireless charging. That's identical to the Fold 8 Ultra. No bigger cell, no faster charging, just the same setup in a fancier body.

Price and Availability: More Expensive Than Last Year

It's priced like jewelry, and it's CNY 2,000 more than last year's W model.

VariantChina PriceApprox. USD
16GB + 512GBCNY 18,999~$2,850
16GB + 1TBCNY 21,999~$3,300

That makes the base W27 pricier than a 1TB Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra in the US at $2,700, though that's not a like for like market comparison. In China it also sits above listed prices for Apple's iPhone Duo. You're paying for the gold trim, the satellite radio, the bundled charger and case, and pricier memory. But that narrows the buyer pool fast.

And as usual for the W line, it stays China only.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is the Samsung Galaxy W27 different from the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra?

Same screens, chip, cameras and battery. The W27 adds the gold accented dual tone design, Heart to the World emblem, Tiantong satellite calling and the collector's edition bundle.

How much does the Samsung Galaxy W27 cost?

In China it starts at CNY 18,999 (about $2,850) for 16GB/512GB and CNY 21,999 (about $3,300) for 16GB/1TB.

Will the Samsung Galaxy W27 launch outside China?

No. It's China only and Samsung hasn't announced any international release, just like past W models.

Does the Samsung Galaxy W27 have satellite connectivity?

Yes, it works on China's Tiantong network for emergency messaging and voice calls.

Final Thoughts

The W27 isn't trying to out spec the Fold 8 Ultra, it's trying to out flex it. If Samsung ever lets this design language loose outside China without the luxury markup, the regular Fold would be a lot harder to ignore.
